Dear Editor,
Recently, there has been much talk about choosing a possible successor to President Jagdeo. I would like to highlight the merits of and recommend Navin Chandarpal as the most suitable presidential candidate for the PPP.
Navin hails from the Ancient County (Berbice) and has a distinguished track record in all areas of government within which he served. He is a most disciplined comrade who never sacrifices principles for personal benefit. I remember well our experiences in the UG/PYO when he stood by his principles which earned him the ire of most of us, including the legendary Bill Carr. As a student of Accabre College (the party’s ideological institute) he was a model student and was always at the top of the class. When he graduated from the University of Guyana, he made the sacrifice to serve within the PPP instead of accepting other lucrative offers. He sacrificed his material well-being for the sake of the party and earned personal kudos from all, especially Dr Cheddi Jagan. He was a devoted comrade from his days as a member of the National Student Committee of the PYO, through Executive Member of the PPP. His political path, which was riddled with obstacles is not an easy one to follow.
At party congresses he was among the top ten elected members. Chandarpal’s devotion to the party is recognized nationally in his position as a Central Committee member and editor of the party’s theoretical bulletin, the Thunder.
A leader must demonstrate capacity, personality (charisma), and have experience, while simultaneously remaining unwavering in adhering to the party’s principles. Navin Chandarpal has exceeded all these requirements and has even more to offer. In actual fact, his contributions were prominent long before Messrs Jagdeo, Ramotar and Robert Persaud came into the service of the PPP. For twenty-eight years he suffered under the ire and wrath of the PNC dictatorship. He survived and never gave up. May I add, that his wife Indra suffered even more.
Whether he is selected or not, Guyanese history has already recorded the achievements of this intelligent young man and we should give him every opportunity to share his remarkable intelligence and experience as President of Guyana.
Yours faithfully,
Vevek Madho
