Keeve Allicock of Harpy Eagle Gym and Nandkumar Singh of Republican fought unbeaten on the opening night of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) National Novices Championship on Saturday at the National Gymnasium.a
Bantamweight Allicock stopped Delon Ryan of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in the second round of their three-round bout in the curtain-raiser. Later, he returned to claim a unanimous decision over another GDF boxer, Mark Marshall.
In the night’s second fight bantamweight Benjamin Henry of the Port Kaituma Gym in Region One, defeated Forgotten Youth Foundation’s (FYF) Carlton La Fleur on points.
Further, on a night filled with fistic excitement, Singh first triumphed over Jim O’Selmo of Port Kaituma and then returned later in the evening to retire FYF’s Delroy Amsterdam, who had earlier stopped Silton David in the lightweight division.
The 11-bout card also saw the referee stopping the contest between Quincy Gomes (GDF) and David Thomas in round two, after it was felt that Thomas was constantly being punished. Meanwhile in the battle of the heavyweights, Drelon Munroe of FYF continued the bad night out for the soldiers when the third man in the ring stopped the fight against Gordon Nedd.
However, in the second fight of the big men, GDF’s Samuel Primo made Brian Bailey of the Republican Gym retire in the final round after a relentless onslaught minutes into the last round. In the light heavyweight division FYF’s Roberto Lancaster beat another GDF boxer in Troyston Thomas; the referee also stopped this bout some time into the second frame.
GDF got their third win of the night when Middleweight Blair Haynes defeated David Duncan on points.
On the other hand, when Stabroek Sport spoke to GABA President Steve Ninvalle he said that the first event of the year marks the commencement of further development for the sport in the Guyana. He thanked all the persons and entities that have contributed to the GABA’s cause.
