BK International Western Tigers and Santos Football Clubs moved on to the quarter-finals of the annual Mayor’s Cup Knockout Competition when they comfortably defeated their opponents at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground on Saturday.
In the double header, Tigers devoured Den Amstel in a one-sided affair that ended with a 6 – 0 score line in the feature match while Santos got past Uitvlugt 2 – 0 in the curtain raiser.
In the feature encounter Nedd Fraser and Giddion Payne of Western Tigers both recorded a double which took the fight out of Den Amstel. The eventual victors put Den Amstel under pressure as early as the sixth minute when Fraser recorded his first goal then his teammate Lyndon Pickett put another goal to the tally the very next minute leaving the opposition in shambles.
Fraser recorded his final goal in the 37th minute to leave his team sitting pretty going into the final half. After the 15 minute break Den Amstel managed to keep Tigers from scoring but whining down to full time, Payne broke loose and made his presence felt. He scored in the 76th and 86th minutes while the final goal was delivered in the 86th minute by Shermon David.
Earlier in the evening, Santos had Uitvlugt on the back foot quite early when they went one goal up in the third minute compliments of Kacy John.
The first half finished with Santos having one goal on the board and Uitvlugt in search of an equalizer. The final 45 minutes saw Santos extending their lead, when Carlos Matthews scored in the 62nd minute.
Western Tigers will now meet Fruta Conquerors in the quarterfinals while Santos is awaiting the winner of the Pele/Seawall encounter.
The action continues this Friday at the GFC ground with Riddim Squad going head to head with Grove Hi Tec in the first match at 6pm followed by the defending championships Pele taking on Seawall FC at 8pm. (Kizan Brummell)
