The Pepsi Hornets’ clinical performances in the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) season opener resulted in championship honours in the Banks DIH 7-a-side Ruby Competition at the National Park yesterday.
The Hornets’ only blemish for the day came when they were beaten by their closest rivals Yamaha Caribs 12-5. Prior to the Hornets loss they were slightly behind the Caribs, who had beaten GDF 19-0; the GDF also had a 0-12 loss to the Hornets.
The competition was stretched even further when the Hornets exacted a sound 34-0 drubbing on the GDF and then they vindicated their early loss to the Yamaha Caribs with a 19-12 victory. The Hornets and the Yamaha Caribs rugby clubs were now tied for first place with six points apiece at the end of the competition.
Eventually, the tournament came down to the deciding match between the Caribs and whipping boys GDF and the Caribs’ margin of victory had to be by 21. The GDF supporters urged their team on to gain a first victory of the competition in what was the final game of the day and denied the Caribs the opportunity to hoist the championship trophy.
And GDF, probably contented with their fill of being on the receiving end of huge defeats, played their hearts out before the match fizzed out to a 29-20 score in favour of the Caribs. The GDF staged a near perfect comeback against the Caribs. Meanwhile, things were not all bad in the Caribs camp at the end of the day as their female team displayed their skill against the Hornets females and attained the winning trophy in the women’s matchup.
Speaking to the participants at the end of the competition, President of the GRFU Kit Nacimento congratulated the Hornets on their superb victory and thanked the sponsors and teams for participating in the competition.
