Two cousins were yesterday charged with attempted murder and placed on $250,000 bail.
It is alleged that on December 23, 2009 at Stabroek, Denzil Kisto and Tito Gowen attempted to murder Damian Trotman. They were not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read by acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Kisto, 32, is an office assistant and resides at 203 Laing Avenue, East Ruimveldt, while Gowen, 30, is an office clerk who lives at VV Durban Street, Wortmanville.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford said that on the day in question, Trotman was at Stabroek Market where he saw Kisto, with whom he had a previous problem. It is alleged that Gowen was in possession of a knife, which he gave to Kisto who stabbed Trotman at the left side of his chest. Trotman collapsed and was taken to the Georgetown Hospital, where he was admitted.
Telford opined that the stabbing might have stemmed from a previous matter between Kisto and Trotman when they were incarcerated at the Camp Street Prison.
The duo was represented by attorney Mohammed Jafar, who told the court that Trotman was the one who approached Kisto with a pair of scissors and he had to take evasive action. He asked for reasonable bail to be granted. In Gowen’s case, Jafar said, it was one of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
When asked by the magistrate if he wished to say anything, Gowen said he was not involved in the incident, he was merely caught in the middle.
He added that he had no problems with Trotman. He said that Kisto and Trotman were trying to solve their problems from prison on the streets.
The pair was granted bail in the sum of $250,000. The matter is set to continue on April 20, when Trotman is expected to appear.
