– Dr Aaron-Parris elected first VP of CNA
Guyana’s national U-16 team began their Caribbean Netball Association (CNA) Under-16 Championship by defeating Bermuda and playing to a draw against St. Kitts on the first two days in Barbados.
On Sunday, Guyana opened up with a victory when they got past Bermuda 29 goals to 28, then battled to a tough draw with St. Kitts (29-29) the following day.
In game one, goal attack, Shonette Estwick, top scored with 15 goals from 19 attempts and goal shooter, Krysty Roberts, supported by scoring 14 goals from 17 attempts.
At the end of the first quarter Bermuda led 10 – 4 while the second quarter saw Guyana catching up and coming within four goals (16 – 12). In the third quarter Bermuda extended their lead (23 – 17) then Guyana staged a fighting comeback to defeat the opposition by one point. In game two, Estwick accumulated another 15 goals while Roberts scored another 14. Guyana trailed in the first quarter, led in the second and third but were unable to hold off St. Kitts as they reached their score before time ran out.
Guyana will go head to head with Cayman Islands today, then they will meet Bermuda, St. Kitts and Cayman Islands on Thursday, Friday and Saturday respectively.
According to a press release, reports from Barbados stated that the team’s discipline is exemplary and the players have been portraying good qualities on and off the court.
The coaches are Lawrence Kellman and Randolph Critchlow with Tracy O’Neal as manager. The Guyana Netball Association (GNA) has extended their gratitude to those who supported them in getting to Barbados. However, they are still seeking funding to offset some expenses that are expected while the team is in Barbados.
Meanwhile, president of the GNA, Dr. Maxine Aaron -Parris was elected as the first vice-president of the CNA at the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) recently held in Barbados.
In the process she defeated the incumbent long-serving first vice- president Gloria Ballantyne of St Vincent and the Grenadines and new comer Patsy James Dragon of Grenada in a straight fight.
Kathy Harper- Hall was returned as president with Debbie Francois and Juliet Cumberbatch returning as secretary and treasurer respectively. They will serve for two terms.
