Berbice Commander Steve Merai told police recruits attending a skills-boosting workshop at the University of Guyana’s (UG) Tain Campus that learning and knowledge must never be seen as problematic but as opportunities for advancement.
The recruits are enrolled in a four-day workshop organised by the Felix Austin Police Training College, UG and the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce. The workshop began on Monday. The programme includes topics such as communication, report writing, communication and mannerly conduct, ethics and ethical behaviour, problem-solving and the fundamentals of computer usage.
Merai urged the recruits to pay rapt attention to the courses and to aspire to learn as much as possible. He also commended the administrators at the campus for organising the programme for the ranks as, “often policemen are ridiculed in the print and electronic media along with certain sections of the public…that they are illiterate and semi-literate.”
Director at Tain Campus, Professor Daizal Samad pointed out that the recruits needed tutoring in other areas that would help them to conduct their duties more efficiently. Samad, who is also a member of the College Management Committee, said 34 recruits participated in an earlier workshop held last November. He, however said, he thought the current workshop as more comprehensive. He envisages courses in First Aid and the fundamentals of forensics and law to be included in next year’s programme.
