A 15-year-old Campbellville Secondary School student was remanded to prison yesterday for allegedly vandalising his teacher’s motorcycle after they had a dispute.
The teenage boy pleaded not guilty to the charge of malicious damage to property when acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read it to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on April 14, at First Street, Campbellville, the boy unlawfully and maliciously damaged a rear view mirror valued $14,000, which is the property of Narine Ramroop.
The teenager stated that he was angry after the argument with Ramroop, leading him to damage the mirror.
However, Ramroop stated that on the day of the incident he was entering a classroom to conduct a class when he noticed the teen, who did not belong to the class, sitting on a desk with his cap on and earrings in his ears. He demanded that the teen take the cap and earrings off but was ignored. He said that he went over to the teen and took the cap off, after which an argument erupted. He said that the teen shortly left the classroom only to divert to where his motorcycle was parked to break the mirror.
The magistrate then told the teen that he should be more respectful to his teachers and all others that are in authority. She lamented that his behaviour was quite displeasing and that he should curb that attitude since he was just a boy.
She remanded the teen and ordered that he be taken to the Probation Office. The case continues on April 23.
