Three residents of Barakara, Canje River, held during an anti-narcotics raid, were remanded to prison when they appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the Reliance Court Thursday.
The three, Glenvis Hinds, 46, his wife Shondell Hinds, 40, and Freddy Edwards, 28, face separate charges of unlawful possession of arms and ammunition, possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and for cultivating prohibited plants.
They pleaded not guilty to the charges and were remanded to prison until May 7, when they are to make their second appearance at the New Amsterdam Magis-trates’ Court.
Police Prosecutor Cor-poral Roberto Figueira told the court
that the police are conducting a drug eradication exercise along the Berbice River and after receiving certain information they raided a house at Barakara last Saturday, April 10. The lawmen unearthed a 12-gauge shotgun along with five matching rounds and 14.653 kilogrammes of dried marijuana. They also found a half-acre plot of marijuana plants ranging from two feet to seven feet in height a short distance away.
The prosecutor said Glenvis and Shondell Hinds were nearby and were promptly arrested.
Edwards was found with a haversack which contained 158 grammes of marijuana in his possession at his house.
Figueira opposed bail on the nature, gravity and prevalence of the crime.
He argued too that bail could only be granted in case of special reasons and none were put forward by the defence counsel, attorney Charrandass Persaud.
