A 25-year-old man is hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital after being shot in his leg by police last evening at Mahaicony.
Up to news time last night, 25-year-old Vidyanand Ramrattan was receiving treatment at the medical institution. According to a relative, Ramrattan and his brother had earlier attended a wedding at Beehive and had gone to the bridegroom’s home in Mahaicony. The relative said that while there Ramrattan’s brother went to urinate but was told not to do so.
The assailant then armed himself with a beer bottle and attacked the man. Upon seeing this Ramrattan went to his brother’s aid; however, the relative described how about three to four men had armed themselves with cutlasses and wood and attacked the brothers. She went on to say that the brothers then started to run, but the police were called and they caught Ramrattan.
She recounted that the lawmen told Ramrattan to lie on the ground and the two of them began to kick and cuff him in his stomach area and also lashed him on the head with a baton.
One then shot him in his upper left thigh, she related. The police rushed Ramrattan to the hospital where he received treatment. The bullet was still lodged inside and doctors told them that he would have to undergo surgery to have it removed, the relative said.
