Rawle Doris of Lot 15 D’Urban Street, Werk-en-Rust, was yesterday sentenced to four years imprisonment when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for throwing a bag with a quantity of cannabis over the fence of the Camp Street prison.
He was also ordered to pay a fine of $300,000.
Doris entered a guilty plea to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
He admitted that on April 15, he had 397 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Prosecutor Joel Ricknauth stated that on the day of the incident Doris was seen by a police officer throwing a yellow bag over the prison fence.
He said the officer apprehended Doris and retrieved the bag and opened it in his presence and the cannabis was found inside.
He went on to say that the cannabis was also weighed in Doris’ presence and then he was charged.
He said Doris told the police that a man gave him the bag and told him to throw it over the prison fence.
Doris repeated this claim in court adding that he did not know what was inside the bag.
