The Mayor’s Cup is set to resume this evening after being set back by inclement weather over the past fortnight.
In an eagerly anticipated double header, 2009 third place finisher the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) will go up against BV Triumph while defending champions, Pele will do battle against Seawall FC. The action is set to kick off at 6 pm.
The winner of the Pele/Seawall FC battle will progress to the quarter-final round and will face Santos FC while the GDF/BV Triumph victor will do battle against Uprising.
Pele captain, Travis Grant, and his deputy Solomon Austin will head into their match with a young squad but with the help of Marvin Joseph, Seon Johnson and Calvin Sheppard it is certain they are going to be pressing for victory. Pele will be under the watchful eye of newly-elected coach Gordon Braithwaite. Their opponents, captained by Delon Josiah, boast a well seasoned team with a few youngsters who have tremendous potential.
Josiah is looking towards players such as Adami Hoyte, Tonie Lopes and Marvin Griffith to step up to the plate if Pele is to progress in the tournament.
GDF is one of the tournament favourites since their line-up consists of belligerent players such as Stellon David, Telston McKinnon and captain, Warren Gilkes. Delroy Dean, Peter Parks and Trevon Lythcott are also valuable players to the squad due to their vast experience.
BV Truimph must be tough if they are to give a good account of themselves against the experienced GDF squad. BV Triumph will need to minimize their mistakes and the team will depend heavily on Shawn Daniels, Colin Jones, Ronell Gordon and Devon Wilson.
