Several persons were injured yesterday when a Route 44 bus and a car collided on Camp Street around midday.
The accident occurred at the junction of Camp and Quamina streets and the injured were rushed to the nearby Georgetown Public Hospital for treatment. The driver of the car, Frank David, 95, suffered a broken foot in two parts and a fractured shoulder, while passengers from the bus sustained bumps and bruises, including one woman who was howling as she was led into the hospital compound.
The minibus, BLL 7791, was heading to Beterverwagting, on the East Coast of Demerara. It was moving north along Camp Street when it collided with the car, PBB 8455. David was reportedly crossing Camp Street from the east, attempting to turn into the western carriageway.
Witnesses at the scene said David was in the wrong. However, his nephew, who arrived after the accident, questioned the speed at which the bus was moving, since it reportedly turned turtle after the collision. “Even if he was in the wrong, what I’m saying is for a bus to turn over it had to be speeding,” David’s nephew stated. The man suggested that his uncle might have underestimated the speed of the bus. He added that while the bus had the “right of way,” drivers on the road should “cater for other road users.”
Meanwhile, one of the passengers of the bus, a woman who said she was in the front seat, claimed that the car drove into the path of the bus. The woman said that all she could remember was “seeing stars.” “Thank God I come out alive,” she added.
