Residents Seafield Village, West Coast Berbice raised issues affecting them such as larceny of livestock and illegal rum shops operating in the area when the ‘B’ Division police held a Face the Community meeting last week.
They also noted that many youths have dropped out of school and are not finding jobs and are getting involved in illegal activities. The residents are also concerned that “stray dogs” were destroying their sheep and poultry.
Deputy Commander Wrenford Johnson told Stabroek News that the meeting was held with the aim of developing a better relationship with residents and to work in partnership with the community.
He said the police are also planning to establish a Community Policing Group in the area so residents can assist in dealing with some of the problems.
Also present at the meeting was Magistrate Nigel Hawke who mentioned that he had not anticipated that West Berbice would have had such a heavy workload with regard to social problems.
He told the residents he wants to help to bring about a change in the community, noting that there had been a case before him at court of a child beating his mother.
