Residents of several areas around the country are expected to have their water supply improved with the drilling of wells in their communities following Cabinet’s no-objection to the awarding of the contracts.
Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon yesterday at a media conference said wells would be drilled in Canefield, East Canje Berbice; Lethem; Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (ECD) and Good Hope, Essequibo Coast to the tune of $89.9 million, $77.13 million, $89.9 million and $69.6 million respectively.
Luncheon also announced that no objections were offered to the contracts for the instillation of transmission mains at nine Guyana Water Inc (GWI) sites around the country.
The Number 19 Village, East Berbice, water system will be upgraded to the tune of $20.9 million, while the cost for the same work at the Amelia’s Ward, Linden, system is set at $18.7 million. Similar work will be done at Parfait Harmonie, West Demerara; Chateau Margot to Mon Repos, ECD; Hope to Clonbrok, ECD; Numbers 72 to 76 Villages, Corentyne; Mon Repos to Good Hope, ECD; Vigilance to Coldigen, ECD and Canal Number Two, West Demerara for the cost of $33.7 million, $20.8 million, $19.6 million, $24.9 million, $20.36 million, $23 million and $17.8 million respectively.
Meanwhile, Luncheon said that a new rice seed facility will be constructed at Number 56 Village, Corentyne to the tune of $174.4 million.
