Two women allegedly caught in a love triangle appeared in Court One of the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with unlawfully assaulting each other so as to cause actual bodily harm.
The charge was read to Patricia Spellen and Amanda Chin-Chan, both of whom pleaded not guilty. It is alleged that on April 20 at Regent Multiplex Mall, they unlawfully assaulted each other. The confrontation is alleged to have stemmed from a relationship that Chin-Chan has with Spellen’s husband.
Attorney-at-law Ronald Burch Smith appeared on behalf of Chin-Chan and told the court that his client is 35 years old and resides at 32 Tamarind Dam, West Coast Demerara. He said she is the proprietress of Shoe Rack located in the Multiplex Mall.
Spellen is a resident of the United States where she is employed as an executive manager at an insurance company. She has retained Abiola Wong as her attorney.
Burch Smith told the court that Chin-Chan was at her business place when she was approached by Spellen who assaulted her. He said that his client never assaulted Spellen and asked for reasonable bail to be granted. He cited her fixed place of abode, no prior matters and not being a flight risk as conditions for bail.
Spellen requested that the proceedings be discontinued until her attorney showed up in court. She said she wanted the matter to be resolved as she will be leaving the country on Sunday.
She alleged that her husband is the owner of the shoe store and not Chin-Chan as was claimed.
Due to the non-appearance of Spellen’s attorney the matter was adjourned to today for trial. Both parties were released on self-bail.
