Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Leila Ramson and Badrudin Hassan will be honoured on Sunday for their outstanding contributions in their respective fields, as part of the Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) activities to commemorate the 172nd anniversary of the arrivals of Indians in Guyana.
In a statement, the IAC said it is customary for it to recognise the contributions made by Indo-Guyanese to the development of Guyana in various fields.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul is recognised for his contribution to Guyanese and West Indies cricket.
He is the holder of the highest aggregate of test runs scored by any Guyanese and the second highest by a West Indian to date.
Leila Ramson is recognised for her contribution in the field of education, especially teaching. She is currently the head of the Teaching Service Commission (TSC).
Badrudin Hassan, known as “Buddy Hassan” was instrumental in the development of the Peter’s Hall Masjid and has served as president of the Jamaat for over fifty years.
The awards will be handed over at a ceremony at the National Park. The IAC introduced its annual award in recognition of the contributions made by Indo-Guyanese to the development of Guyana in various fields. Past recipients include Pat Dyal, Yesu Persaud, Tota Mangar, among others.
