A fisherman, accused of committing high seas piracy on other fishermen in the Corentyne River, was yesterday refused bail by Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop at the Whim Court.
Reports are that on Saturday April 17, Terry Henry, 29, of Lot 6 ‘A’ Fyrish, Corentyne together with others who were armed with guns, robbed Thomby ‘Jango’ Veerasammy of Good Hope, East Coast Demerara and his crew.
The court heard that Veerasammy and his crew were fishing just off the shore at No. 43 Village when the defendant relieved them of a quantity of fish and fish glue, gasoline and other articles.
Henry was reportedly employed with the owner of the boat that was used to carry out the attack.
He was charged following an identification parade.
Members of the Berbice Anti-Piracy Committee (BAPC), with the assistance of the police, captured the pirates’ boat with loot on Sunday morning.
The members were patrolling the river when in the vicinity of Adventure they spotted a boat with three men acting in a suspicious manner.
As the team approached the boat the men abandoned it and escaped into the bushes.
