The Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) kicked off its Trophy Stall sponsored doubles tournament at the Pegasus International Hotel Lawn Tennis Court yesterday.
This is the GLTA’s third tournament for the year 2010 and the first that is entirely doubles. It is scheduled to run for two weekends, from April 23-25 and April 30-May 2 at the Pegasus International Hotel and Le Ressouvenir Lawn Tennis Court.
At the opening of the tournament yesterday, GLTA’s Chairperson and Junior Development Officer Grace McCalman stated that the association decided to make the tournament into the smaller doubles format instead of the longer tournament because they do not have their own facility to accommodate play for a long period of time.
Meanwhile, arrangements are being made for the start of the GBTI open tournament on May 7.
The tournament which began at 18:00 hrs yesterday will see players competing in eight categories, namely, Men’s over 55 years, Men’s over 45 years, Men’s over 35 years, Men’s open doubles, Mixed doubles, Ladies doubles, Junior boys and Junior girls.
In the opening match of the tournament yesterday Maxie Fox and Steve Surujbally went up against Fritz Mc Lean and the former Over 45 Champion Brian Fung in the Men’s Over 55 category. Matches were also contested in the other men’s categories and the mixed doubles category yesterday evening.
