The PPP extends hearty congratulations to President Bharrat Jagdeo who was conferred with the 2010 Champion of the Earth award, the United Nations’ highest award for environmental leadership.
In a press release the party said the award was bestowed on Jagdeo in recognition of Guyana’s contribution towards enhancing the condition of the planet. It said the president has been a serious advocate and defender of the environment and his proposal for a Low Carbon Development Strategy has attracted worldwide attention.
According to the United Nations Environmental Programme website Jagdeo is one of six winners who were “drawn from the worlds of government, science, business and entertainment, each exemplify how action, inspiration, personal commitment and creativity can catalyze a transition to a low carbon, resource efficient 21st-century Green Economy.” He was given a Special Award for Biodiversity Conservation and Ecosystem Management. Jagdeo announced that the prize money will be used to enhance Guyana’s interior communities, the release said.
