GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Exciting middle-order batsman Eion Morgan said yesterday that England were raring to go in their first assignment of the World Twenty20 Championship against West Indies tomorrow.
“I think we have a good chance of winning the tournament. We have had a good preparation period over the last couple of weeks, and the guys are all confident of making a big impression in the Caribbean,” Morgan revealed.
The dashing left-hander, who has done well for England in this innovative version of the game since making his debut last June, said the team was well-balanced and once they remained focussed, lifting the trophy in Barbados later this month would not be difficult.
“I am confident that we will be the championship team in this competition,” he said.
“I know a lot of teams have really prepared for this competition because of the importance, but I think we have prepared in aspects of our game, that is why I am very optimistic.”
The 23-year-old Morgan, who a cracked a 45-ball unbeaten 85 against South Africa last year to register his highest Twenty20 score, reckoned that the pitches in the Caribbean were very good for batting and he remained upbeat he would come good against the Windies.
“I have done a lot of work over the past several months on my batting especially for this format of the game, and coming off the India Premier League where I was in the Bangalore team with the likes of Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid and others was a great experience and it has immensely boosted my confidence for this tournament,” said Morgan who has also represented Ireland in the past.
England have been grouped alongside the hosts and Ireland and are scheduled to meet the Irish on Tuesday at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence.
They will have a score to settle with the Windies who eliminated them with a crucial second round victory in the tournament in England last year.
