-ousts top club in penalty shootout
Unfancied Riddim Squad created a major upset by defeating Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United in their quarterfinal clash of the annual Mayor’s Cup Knockout Tournament Friday evening at the Georgetown Football Club ground to reach the semifinal round of the competition.
The young, aggressive team fought a tough battle against Guyana’s football giants with the outcome of the game eventually being decided by penalty kicks.
The Riddim Squad players held their composure throughout the entire match and prevented Alpha United from scoring in regulation and extra time.
They then scored five times from the penalty sport to three times for Alpha United to book a semi-final spot.
In the curtain raiser the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) team’s game against Uprising was also decided by penalty kicks after the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Uprising drew first blood 24 minutes into the encounter compliments of Norde McDonald and held on to the lead until half time.
Upon resumption, the GDF team searched desperately for the equaliser which they found in the 67th minute through Ryan Adolphus.
The score remained that way until the end of extra time which led to another sudden death penalty shootout.
In the end GDF triumphed 9 – 8 to reach the last four and will battle Riddim Squad for a spot in the final.
The competition continues on Wednesday with the remaining quarterfinal matches which will pit Santos against Seawall FC and BK International Western Tigers against Fruta Conquerors.
