Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton on Monday ordered that a 16-year-old boy be remanded to police custody when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magis-trate’s Court charged with being in unlawful possession of a gun and a quantity of ammunition.
The teen pleaded not guilty to the charges of unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.
He denied that on April 30, he had a .25 pistol and seven matching rounds of ammunition in his possession without having a firearm licence in force at the time.
Attorney-at-law Mohamed Zafar applied for bail for the teenager on the grounds that he had no previous convictions.
He said that his client has just finished secondary school and has plans to enter the Government Technical Institute.
The lawyer, pointing to several abrasions on his client’s arms and face, told the court that the police had beaten his client shortly after finding him with the gun.
He explained that just after his client had found the gun he was on his way to take it to the police station when the police found it on him and arrested him.
However, Prosecutor Shellon Daniels told the court that the police were conducting a stop and search exercise when they saw the teen and conducted a search on him when they discovered the gun and ammunition in his pants crotch.
The teen is scheduled to make another court appearance on July 30. (AB)
