A man was remanded to prison by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson when he appeared before her yesterday charged with committing an indecent act and escaping from custody.
Kevin Harry pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him. It is alleged that on April 4 at Tabatinga, Lethem he committed an indecent act with intent to offend a young woman. It is further alleged that on the same day at Beverly Hills, Lethem, being in lawful custody of the police on a criminal charge, he escaped from custody.
Harry of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam told the court that he paid the police $200,000 so that they might let him go. He alleged that the sum was requested by the police. He said upon payment, they removed the handcuffs and allowed him to ride away.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford told the court that virtual complainant, a foreigner, was vacationing in Guyana. She attended the Lethem Rodeo and around midnight on the day in question, was held at knife-point by Harry who took her to a home.
Once there, he allegedly demanded sex from her. The prosecutor added that the VC was unable to fulfil his demands and Harry forced her to perform oral sex on him. She was able to escape and made a report to the police, who arrested Harry.
Telford added that on the way to the station, Harry escaped into some bushes. A search was later made for him and he was subsequently re-arrested by the police.
Harry was remanded to prison and the matter was transferred to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court for June 1.
