A 34-year-old woman, who was involved in a three-way smash-up on Dennis Street, Sophia on Saturday night, succumbed to her injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Sunday afternoon.

According to relatives of Rhonda Vantull, of Lot 14, Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara , the woman  succumbed to internal injuries which she sustained  during the accident which occurred around 8 pm on Saturday.

Reports are that Vantull and her husband, Gordon Vantull had stopped to purchase a food item at the corner of the road along Dennis Street, when they were hit off their motorcycle by minibus BKK 1133.

Another couple was hit prior to the Vantulls by the same minibus, which was said to be speeding along the roadway at the time.

Tessa Adams, who was the pillion rider on that motorcycle at the time, was said to be in a semi-conscious state yesterday afternoon in a hospital in the city while her husband sustained mild injuries and was discharged from the hospital.

Gordon and Rhonda Vantull had been together for more than 15 years and would have celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary this year.

Relatives of the deceased told this newspaper that the injured women were rushed to the public hospital and only “appeared” to have sustained mild injuries. However, the woman’s mother-in-law stated that the injured woman was complaining of pains about the body, including her abdomen as she made attempts to eat. She said the woman seemed to “be okay” and was chatting with relatives during the hospital visiting hours on Sunday afternoon before she took a turn for the worse. She succumbed to her injuries around 5.30 pm.

This newspaper understands that the driver of the minibus, who was detained shortly after the accident by ranks of the Turkeyen Police station, is expected to be charged.

Rhonda Vantull leaves to mourn her husband, other relatives and friends and she is expected to be buried later this week.
