Dear Editor,
I do support the Linden Town Week celebrations; the visits by overseas visitors; the going and coming of citizens from all over Guyana; the decoration of our town by the various businesses; and most of all, the fun and frolic that we are so much accustomed to. My question is, who or what gains from Town Week activities?
I made some observations and recognized that every year it’s the same thing. For example, the external appearance of the Linden Town Hall is very untidy. Grass is growing on the pavement outside the fence of the building; the drains or gutters on Republic Avenue are filled with grass, wild eddoes, food boxes and plastic bottles. Greenheart Street, Mora Street, Potaro Road, Berbice Road and all the other drains are no different in appearance. The newly constructed river wall is filled with plastic and glass bottles, food boxes and all sorts of garbage.
Lindeners are a good people to be celebrating 40 years of township in an untidy situation. My question once again is, who or what or which organization gains from Linden Town Week activities? My answer is the town administration and the business sector. I suggest that those two groups make a collaborated effort before, during and after the celebration of Town Week to bring about a change in the physical appearance and the social standing of our town.
Yours faithfully,
Winslow Parris
