Two men snatched $50, 000 during a robbery at the Hilton Chinese Restaurant on Thursday, minutes after they posed as customers and ordered food.
No one was hurt during the incident and the bandits, described as “young and well dressed,” escaped from the Middleton and Garnett streets eating house in a silver grey AT 192 Carina that was parked a short distance away.
According to reports reaching Stabroek News, the men entered and ordered Chinese food around 9pm and while waiting to be served they pulled out their weapons. A customer, who was standing nearby, was relieved of $10,000 while the restaurant lost $40, 000 in the robbery.
A senior police officer yesterday expressed concern over the availability of weapons and questioned the source. The officer told this newspaper that guns in the city are being confiscated regularly yet armed robberies are continuing. Up to press time last evening neither gunman had been caught.
