Athletics fans can expect some thrilling performances tomorrow as the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) hosts their International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) Athletics Day Championships at the Police Sports Club ground.
The meet will commence at 09:00 hrs and will accommodate athletes in two categories, each featuring track and field events.
The inter-school category will be open to all schools giving students between the ages of 12–15 the opportunity to participate in 80m, 150m and 1000m races while the track events will also feature a 2000m racewalk. Field events will include long jump, shot-put and discus. The youth category will entail athletes from 14–17-years-old participating in 100m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, and 3000m races, a 3000m racewalk for the boys and a 2000m racewalk for the girls will also be part of the championships.
In the field events long jump, shot-putt and javelin are scheduled for the boys, while long jump, discus and shot-putt are on the girls programme.
Competition Director, Mark Scott, stated that while registration for the meet is free, institutions are required to register the names of athletes expected to take part in the competition.
Registration will be conducted at the AAG’s office in Olympic House on High Street. Registration closes at 16:00 hrs today.
