The first of the final three nights of competition in the annual Mayor’s Cup Knockout Football Tournament starts tonight where four teams clash for the two remaining semifinal spots and another chance of claiming top honours and the grand prize.
In the double header scheduled to kick off at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground from 6pm, Santos faces Seawall FC then BK International Western Tigers clash with Fruta Conquerors in the second match at 8pm.
The tournament has been plagued by the recent inclement weather and today’s fixture was postponed from earlier in the week.
The winners of these two quarterfinal matches will face each other in the semifinal round to decide who advances to the final.
Riddim Squad and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) are the teams already through to the semis and will face each other Sunday at the same venue.
Tonight, the Santos line up that includes last year’s Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament Shemroy Arthur along with William Europe, Trevor Lewis, Kasi John and O’Neal Heywood are expected to be going hard against the Delon Josiah-led Seawall FC.
The Seawall team will also feature the likes of Tony Lopes, Garlon Lewis, Cleveland Walcott, Marvin Griffith and Michael Castello who are playing within a very motivated team after they comfortably defeated the tournament’s defending champions, Pele.
Western Tigers will hope to be roaring to their loudest after a good start to the tournament as they oppose the tough Fruta Conquerors team.
The Tigers squad includes players such as Sherman David, Gavin Wilson, Nedd Fraser, Giddion Payne, Dwayne Ali, Derrick Carter and Michael Henry while the Conquerors are expected to match their skills with Neville Stanton, Paul Bobb, Jomo Hinds, Joslyn Harry, Sheldon Sheppard and Eon Alleyne.
