The University of Guyana (UG) Inter-Faculty Basketball Competition commenced yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall but not before a lengthy delay due to the hosting of the Schools physical display at the venue.
The competition, which was scheduled to begin at noon, finally got started two-and-a-half hours later, but it did not disappoint the supporters of the Faculty of Health Sciences whose team narrowly clinched a 65-51 points overtime win against the UG Staff team.
The scores were mostly level throughout the game and the experienced staffers traded baskets with the energized Health Sciences squad from jump ball to the buzzer at the end of regulation time.
The Staff team accumulated a brief lead at the end of the fourth quarter but this was quickly erased and they found themselves trailing by two points after a 6-0 run by the Health Sciences team in the final two minutes.
With 12 seconds remaining, a full court run by Staff’s Gerald Harry allowed them to level the game at the end of regulation time after he weaved his way around the Health Sciences defenders for an easy lay-up to take the game into overtime.
However, the Staff team was unable to add much to their regulation time total in overtime as they were restricted to four points in the additional period, while Health Sciences added eight outscoring their opponents to secure the win.
Health Sciences Sean Lashley and Staff’s Gerald Harry both netted 22 points for their respective teams.
Prior to Health Sciences win, the Faculty of Social Sciences secured a walk-over victory after the Faculty of Education and Humanities failed to show up for the opening game.
The Inter-Faculty Basketball Competition continues tomorrow at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall from 12pm with the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry going up against the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
