The Judo Association of Guyana (JAG) will once again be attending the Roraima International Judo Cup to be held next month in Boa Vista, Brazil.
This time, however, the team will be without the presence of last year’s gold medalist, Athena Gaskin.
The JAG last year sent a seven member team to the event and returned with commendable first time performances.
The sole female, Gaskin, earned a gold medal while the other six judokas were able to achieve bronze medals.
The JAG on Sunday staged a competition which doubled as trials for the upcoming event.
Members from two of the JAG clubs; the Rising Sun and the House of Water; took part in the event.
Participants that came first, second and third earned themselves a place on the representing team.
The event saw the association attempting a first when it decided to mix the males and females in the junior category since Gaskin and Khadidja Ba were the only female judokas leaving them short of corresponding adversaries.
Eight of the participating judokas earned spots on the representing team; three from the junior category, two heavyweight seniors and three lightweight seniors.
The three representing juniors are Rawle Lall, Elimane Ba, while seniors Bruce Fraser and Winston Stuart will represent in the heavyweight category and Michael De Jesus, Sherwin Primo and Ralph Singh in the lightweight category.
