A woman who said that the actions of the police caused her to behave disorderly was fined $10,000 by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday.
Akila Jones of 1980 Festival City, South Ruimveldt pleaded guilty to behaving disorderly in public.
She accused a police officer of calling her a “jackass”, which incensed her.
She said that the police officer reprimanded her for speaking unmannerly in the presence of other bystanders on the road. She said she was angry because on two separate occasions she was made to disembark from the buses she was in because the police ordered the driver to empty the vehicles.
She said she just wanted to get home.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford said that it is the job of the police to maintain law and order.
On the day in question, he said that Jones was in an overloaded minibus which was stopped by the police. She is said to have become annoyed and started hurling insults at the officer. She reportedly said that “the police want money for tea.”
She was then fined and warned to conduct herself properly in public.
