One of Georgetown’s top football clubs Fruta Conquerors on Friday received over a million dollars in gear from the Guyana Beverage Company (GBC).
The GBC has over the years been the main sponsor of the football club which has allowed the club to be one of the better clubs in the capital city with a strong youth programme.
“We have pumped over $1million in this year’s sponsorship and I’m proud to announce that we will continue to do so next year as well, providing our image is not tarnished,” said Robert Selman Managing Director of the company.
In presenting the gear to Neville Stanton captain of the club, Selman said over the past decade the success of the club has enabled the company’s product to be the top selling juice in the country.
Also present at yesterday’s ceremony were Jevin Rodrigues, club executive Margaret Schultz, Customer Relations Representative of the company Shameiza Yadram.
Acting president of Fruta Conquerors Football Club Ivor Thompson praised the company’s contribution to the club.
“Eighteen years ago, we formed Fruta Conquerors focusing on youths in the community and today, we have 40 players registered in the Premier League, 30 competing in under-17 to 19 competitions and another 40 in Under-11 to 15 tournaments, said the former national hockey player.
“This input by the Guyana Beverages Company speaks volumes with regards to their commitment with us and hopefully, we can turn things around in the not-too-distant future, starting with the present ongoing Mayor’s Cup football tournament,” he added.
Club member Mustapha Haqq, thanked the company on behalf of the players for their sponsorship.
