Taylor Fernandes captured her first national squash title when she defeated Larissa Wiltshire 3-2 to win the girls’ under 13 category as the Woodpecker Products sponsored national junior championships ended last Sunday.
Wiltshire took a commanding 2-0 lead and was a point away from the win at 11-10 in the third game but roared back to take the third 13-11. She then showed great determination in grinding out wins in the next two games 11-9, 11-9 to complete a miraculous comeback.
Another encounter which lived up to its pre-match billing was the boys U-19 semi-final between Deje Dias and Jason Ray Khalil.
After splitting the first two games Khalil edged ahead after he came back from 4-9 down to take the third 13-11.
Dias managed to push the match into a deciding set when he clinched the fourth game 11-9.
The final game saw the service exchanging hands several time before Khalil got it back at 3-3 and proceeded to serve out the match 11-3.
Tournament Director Deje Dias thanked the sponsors Woodpecker Products for their long time support of junior squash and the Georgetown Club, the coaches, players and parents for doing their part in making the tournament a success.
Prizes were presented to the top three finishers in each category and there were also special prizes handed out to the best newcomer, most improved boy and girl, a sportsmanship award as well as one for the most outstanding player.
