Two men who reportedly behaved disorderly after one of them was slapped with a traffic charge were released on bail on Thursday when they appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson charged with the offences.
Pradeep Abdool, 43, of 190 Montrose, East Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge of assaulting a police officer and disorderly behaviour. Sheik Farouk, 37, of 75 Public Road, Houston, East Bank Demerara was charged with disorderly behaviour.
It is alleged that on May 19 at Peter’s Hall Public Road, EBD, both Abdool and Farouk behaved disorderly. It is also alleged that on the same day Abdool unlawfully assaulted Corporal Shawn McPhoy who was executing his duties.
Attorney Euclin Gomes represented the pair. He said that they both have unblemished records and are not flight risks since they both have businesses in the country. He asked for reasonable bail to be granted.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford said that the duo believe that they are above the law. He said on the day in question, Abdool was allegedly driving a motor vehicle in a dangerous manner on the road when he was pulled over by a police patrol. He allegedly pointed his finger in the policeman’s face and both defendants verbally abused the police. The prosecutor asked for bail to be refused. However, they were both granted $20,000 bail on the disorderly conduct charge and Abdool was granted $25,000 on the assault charge.
The matter was transferred to Court Two for July 7.
