Dear Editor,
A photo is indeed worth a million and I have to give SN a ‘pump fist’ for its back page report and picture dated May 22 of the photo finish between overseas-based Guyanese Marian Burnett and Panama’s Andrea Ferris. Marian came very close to securing the gold in the 800m at the Caixa Para International Grand Prix in Belem, Brazil and this is exactly what I expect of athletic ambassadors at overseas meetings. They have to dig deep with everything they have in reserve and give a tight run to the very last. I hope that all those who might have had access to this particular publication, would say, well done to Marian Burnett internally. It’s only a matter of time before my quest is completed and I would sit back and have a Cuban cigar.
Topaz has set the bar so high with his contribution of real ‘gold medals’ to the swimming fraternity and I can finally say that the business community is doing great with their contribution and Guyana is going to go places and create an impact at a much higher level in sport.
The government must be credited for their contribution towards sponsorship for athletes winging off to the CAC Games in Mayaquez, Puerto Rico slated for July 17-August 1.
Chavez Ageday, Jevina Straker, Curtis Fraser and any other potential representatives, should tap themselves on the shoulder for getting the opportunity that came their way once again for exposure and representing The Golden Arrowhead. I urge kind-hearted persons and companies in the business community who haven’t been able to come forward yet to give consideration to a good cause and join the bandwagon and let us showcase Guyana in a more positive light.
There is the CAC Junior Championships in Santo Domingo slated for July 3-5 and the
World Junior Championships in Canada from July 19-25. I have no idea if the tourism fraternity has paid any attention to sports in general, but I believe they should get involved in whatever way they can. Athletic ambassadors help to sell a country in one way or the other to potential visitors.
I believe the sports fraternity needs to be more pro-active with fund-raising events which can generate funds to help offset travelling expenses for sports ambassadors along with support from the business community and the government of the day.
Yours faithfully,
T Pemberton
