Dear Editor,
I wish to register my disgust and abhorrence over the primal assault on Kaieteur News columnist Freddie Kissoon. The material thrown in his face is reflective of where Guyana has been taken by attitudes, policies and behaviours unprecedented in our history.
I am not in the least surprised by this attack, because a climate is being created in this nation that influences such attacks on those who criticize the manner in which the nation is being run.
Over the past several years, Kissoon’s comments have been labelled as incitements for one segment of the population to engage in violence against another. This bottom-feeding effort is designed to silence exposure of the issues that are affecting the quality of life of everyone who inhabits this nation.
I believe that Indians like Freddie Kissoon, Peter Ramsaroop, CN Sharma and others, who examine and react to the issues in Guyana through a broad prism of objective conscience rather than the narrow operant of race and ethnicity become subjected to antipathy by those whose ideology is in the opposite direction. Nothing can be more symbolic of this kind of depraved reaction than someone walking around with a container of faeces, clearly tracking Kissoon and waiting for the opportune moment to launch an attack.
Yours faithfully,
Mark A Benschop
