-West Demerara is U-17 Inter-Association Champion
The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) was in luck that despite inclement weather it was able to complete the three tournaments being played across the country from Sunday to Wednesday.
On Wednesday the final of the Inter-Association Under-17 Tournament was contested between West Demerara (WD) and Georgetown at the Georgetown Football Club Ground (GFC) where West Demerara outplayed their opponents to become the champion.
Berbice finished in the third spot by defeating Linden in the third place showdown prior to the final.
The closely contested match-up that finished 2 – 1 had the eventual victors drawing first blood by forcing a defence error on the opposition to go one up in the 20th minute.
However, Georgetown equalized five minutes into the second half (50th), compliments of King Archer who rocked the back of the net. Not long after Dellon Lanferman found the back of the net for West Demerara to regain the lead for his team in the 58th minute and defended it until the final whistle for victory.
Berbice’s Javano Luiz was adjudged the Most Outstanding Goalkeeper while West Demerara’s Trayon Bobb and Sherwin Lewis of Berbice shared the Highest Goal Scorer award by accumulating seven goals each.
Trayon Bobb also claimed the Most Valuable Player award and the East Bank team was judged the Fair Play Team.
Meanwhile, the tournament continues on Sunday at the GFC Ground with the final match of the first round between Sunburst Camptown and Liquid Gold kicking off at 2pm.
Liquid Gold who are on seven points are in a must-win situation to make the top eight and advance to the next round. If they happen to play to a draw against Camptown they will equalize on points with eighth place holder Top XX but will not be able to make it through because of Top XX’s superior goal difference.
The competition continued with a double header on Wednesday at the Mackenzie Sports Complex Ground (MSC) where Camptown sank Top XX 3 – 1 and Milerock rocked Victoria Kings 3 – 0.
In the Women’s Tournament, Georgetown and Lethem played to a nil-all draw when they collided on Tuesday at the GFC Ground and Linden defeated Bartica 2 – 0 the following day in Linden at the MSC Ground.
The first round in this tourney concludes today at the GFC Ground when Georgetown, with seven points, clashes with Linden, with six points, from 6pm to determine the League Leader after round one.
