Students of the Covent Garden Secondary School were Thursday presented with a number of jerseys under the Colgate brand by Brand Manager of Geddes Grant Limited Stuart May during a presentation ceremony at their school.
The jersey’s will be worn by the students during the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) – organised schools league which is scheduled to begin at a date to be announced by the GRFU.
According to May, the company’s aim is to assist the next generation of rugby players to develop in the sport.
May added that he hopes his company’s involvement could lead to the emergence of the next generation of outstanding rugby players.
He also stated that the involvement of players at such an early age can also help instill good discipline which is an important requirement in life.
He pointed out that Guyanese should be proud of the achievements of the men’s and women’s rugby squads, because their successes at the regional level has brought positive recognition to the game here.
Also speaking at ceremony was Troy Yhip, who conducts the coaching sessions.
Yhip, who has also been working towards the development of the sport, noted that the programme started just over a year ago and has so far produced two players who have gone on to become national Under-19 players.
Those players are Vallon Adams and Claude Alexander, while Raj Chandrasekar has just been included on the provisional squad in training for the upcoming Regional U-19 Tournament.
In closing, members of the teaching staff which included Headmistress Julie Duncan, thanked Yhip and Geddes Grant for supporting for the school’s teams, adding that the programme was indeed a very good initiative and will serve as a vital developmental tool for the youths.
