Pickering Squash Club’s Jean-Claude Jeffrey of Ajax capped a stellar squash season with a championship title recently in Canada.
Jeffrey, 14, who has Guyanese parents and is a grade nine student at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School in Ajax, won the under-15 age category of the Head-sponsored Ontario Junior Silver Squash Championships, defeating Scott Van Deursen of the Granite Club in Toronto by a score of 3-1 in the final match.
The tournament was held at the Fabulous Fitness Racquet Club in Concord and featured 130 entrants from across the province.
The previous weekend, Jeffrey had placed sixth at the Ontario Junior Open Championship in Niagara Falls and headed into the silver championship with confidence from the strong showing.
Having moved to Ajax in 2008 with his squash-playing family from Guyana, Jeffrey found that the junior programmes at both the Pickering Recreation Complex and Fabulous Fitness have improved his play significantly.
The talented junior also won the Pickering Squash Club men’s B championship during last week.
Next year, his goal is to improve enough to attend the junior nationals.
