Police are continuing to investigate the shocking discovery of a firearm in a checked piece of luggage at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Sunday morning and five persons remain in custody.
Crime Chief Seelall Persaud would only say “investigations are continuing” when contacted on the bust by two Special Constables just after 10 am on Sunday. The .44 Magnum along with 109 grammes of cocaine was discovered in the suitcase that was already checked in.
Persaud would not say whether charges will be laid shortly or whether the bust may be part of a larger smuggling ring.
Police in a release on Sunday said two outgoing LIAT passengers and three other persons were arrested following the find.
According to the release, the two Special Constables manning the baggage scanner at the airport conducted a search on a “checked-in suitcase” and discovered the illegal items.
The release said a man and woman, passengers on the LIAT flight, were subsequently arrested and further investigations led to the arrest of two other men and another female. They remain in police custody assisting with the investigations.
