Defending first division league champions Hikers, defeated Old Fort 9-4 when the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) Mr. Topper’s Indoor tournament commenced Monday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Old Fort’s Tony Cole opened the scoring two minutes into the match but Hikers’ Shane Samuels evened the score from the penalty corner.
Old Fort took a 3-1 lead through goals from Aderemi Simon in the 12th and Asofei Simon one minute later.
But Hikers struck back with two goals of their own through Colonel Heywood in the 15th minute and Devin Munroe who scored three minutes from half time.
Hikers found their rhythm in the second half with goals from Robert Fernandes (22nd), Munroe (24th) minute, Robert France (34th), Alex Gouveia (36th), Samuels (37th) and Heywood who scored a minute from full time.
Old Fort could only scrape together one last goal from Chris Low – Koan who scored in the 26th minute.
In the evening’s curtain raiser, GCC Tigers lost to the GCC Spartans 2-3 in a women’s game.
Spartans’ Narzana Fiedtkou scored two first half goals and Vanessa Pires added another in the second half while the Tigers’ goals were scored by Brenette Gordon and Shebiki Baptiste.
There were three second division matches on the night.
In the first game, Hikers One defeated Hikers Two by a 2-1 margin.
Hikers One took the lead through Rayon Branford before Jamari Assanah tied the score.
However, Hikers One captain Anton Duke broke the deadlock scoring the final goal of the game.
In another second division encounter GCC through goals from Leonard George, Stuart Gonsalves, Steven Xavier and Shaka Gill defeated Western Dragons 4-1.
Western Dragons lone goal was scored by Deon Branford.
And in the final second division game Old Fort defeated Police 8 – 3.
For Old Fort Roy Mendonca scored four goals, Tony Cole, two, and Dwayne Alleyne and Compton Dolphin one goal each.
Two of the Police’s goals were scored by Michael Bourne and Trevor Wharton scored the remaining goal.
In the veterans’ game Old Fort defeated Hikers 2 – 0 with Gavin Hope and Robert Hussain the goal scorers.
