President of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Julian Hunte has said the decision taken by Minister of Sport, Frank Anthony to have the finances of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) audited should help “in clearing all the issues in contention”.
Hunte was at the time responding to questions posed to him by Stabroek News following allegations of financial irregularities made against the GCB. Some in the executive and others close to cricket believe the allegations were the reason behind the acid attack on board official Pretipaul Jaigobin because he had spoken out about alleged wrongdoing by the board.
Following the allegations, Minister Anthony summoned the board to a meeting and among the decisions taken was to have the Office of the Auditor General audit the finances of the GCB.
“The WICB has heard of the allegations and threats made,” Hunte told Stabroek News via email yesterday.
“It is with interest that the WICB notes the action of the Honorable Minister which will provide an audit of the finances of the board,” Hunte further said
However, he said it would be inappropriate for the WICB to make any pronouncement unless the facts are established.
From all indications there is deep rift in the membership of the board and Hunte said the WICB will offer assistance to deal with this issue when it is appropriate.
“The WICB is always available and when appropriate will act to engage all parties in the GCB to address any divisions that exist within the membership,” he said.
