President Bharrat Jagdeo said the absence of an international an agreement to achieve and finance the desired cut in greenhouse gases remains a major obstacle in the management of climate change.
World Environment Day is being observed today under the theme ‘Many Species, One Planet, One Future,’ a press release from Office of the President said. The theme allows the world to focus on global challenges that require urgent and concerted attention, during the year which is also the International Year of Biodiversity.
This commitment is at the heart of Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy, the President said. According to Jagdeo, the reduction of greenhouse gases is critical to the survival of the species. “This reduction is now a global imperative… This is why collective and responsible global action is needed,” he was quoted as saying.
“I wish to remind the leadership of the international community that time is not on our side,” he added, emphasising that it needs to respond to food, energy and financial crises now to intervene successfully in stemming the impact of climate change. “We need to return to the negotiating table to hammer out a deal that would demonstrate our common commitment and responsibility to save our planet. Unless we act now, we run the risk of acting too late,” he further said.
