Caribbean girls’ Under-13 singles champion Chelsea Edghill swept to three titles as the National Sports Commission sponsored annual Independence table tennis tournament continued yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
After winning the girls’ 13 years and under title on Saturday, Edghill yesterday added the girls 15 years and under and the girls’ 18 years and under titles to her bulging bag.
In the final of the 15 years and under category, Edghill came up against “old” nemesis Akecia Nedd who had in the past beaten her on occasions.
The outcome however was a 3-0 whipping of Nedd with Edghill winning in straight games 11-8, 11-8, 11-7.
Jamaali Homer snatched third place from Olivia Weekes in a closely contested game which seesawed back and forth. It was anybody’s game until the fifth and final set when Homer prevailed 8-11, 12-10, 8-11, 13-11, 13-11.
In the girls’ 18 years and under final, Edghill defeated Adielle Rosheuvel 12-10, 11-5, 11-6.
Nedd defeated Angelina Rampersaud 11-5, 11-7, 11-4 for third place.
Edghill then added another title teaming up with Homer to defeat Rosheuvel/Nedd 11-0, 11-5, 13-11 in the girls’ doubles final.
The “battle of the Johnsons” could best describe the final of the boys’ 13 years and under category and after the dust settled it was Joseph Johnson who came out on top of Elishaba Johnson winning 11-9, 6-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6.
Joseph again got the better of Elishaba in the semi-final of the 15-years and under category but lost to Sachin Panday 11-6, 11-5, 11-4 in the final.
Panday had earlier defeated top seed Samuel Fraser in the other semi-final.
Last year’s 18 years and under champion Nigel Bryan, successfully defended his title against Denzil Hopkinson winning 11-6, 7-11, 11-4, 11-9.
Fraser placed third by defeating Zane Humphrey 6-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-7.
The tournament continues on Saturday from 3pm at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
