A 15-year-old who sustained broken legs and shoulder after she was hit by a speeding car while waiting on a bus in front of her school is now a patient in the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Last Friday, Lisa Mc Farlane had finished school for the day and was awaiting transportation in the corner of the road near the Belladrum Secondary School, West Berbice.

According to one of her friends who witnessed the accident, the car PKK 4283 came speeding down the road and swerved and struck Mc Farlane head on.

Mc Farlane’s friend said other witnesses to the accident reported that the man appeared to have been sleeping at the wheel. After colliding with Mc Farlane, the friend said, the driver got out of the car shook the broken glass off his clothes got back in the car and drove away.

Public-spirited citizens rushed to Mc Farlane’s aid.

The driver meanwhile parked his car in front of a resident’s home in Lichfield, West Berbice telling the resident that he had hit a cow, Mc Farlane’s mother said she learned.

The Lichfield resident called the police but by the time they arrived, the driver had made good his escape. Police are investigating the matter.

The car, a grey Toyota AT 192, is in the custody of the police.

Meanwhile, Mc Farlane’s mother worries that her daughter may be suffering amnesia since she cannot recall anything of the accident and would sometimes forget where she was or what was asked of her.

According to the mother, both her daughter’s legs were broken and her spleen ruptured. The girl also sustained a broken shoulder. “It painful for me to watch me daughter in so much pain,” the mother said.
