Minster of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai said $3 million have been released to provide food and agriculture supplies for farmers in Massakenyari following flooding in the area.
On Saturday Sukhai told the media that the ministry has been mobilising resources to cushion the effects of heavy rainfall in the Deep South, Region Nine agricultural area. She said the allotment will enable farmers to cultivate crops on new farmlands in cases where some areas are too water-logged for planting, a Government Information Agency (GINA) press statement said.
GINA said no flooding has been reported in regions one, three and or four though regions five and six have been affected. At Moraikobai 26 farms with crops such as pumpkins, eddoes, cucumber and cassava have been affected while at Orealla five farms on low-lying lands have been flooded.
Also, several areas in Region Seven where ground provisions are cultivated including Phillipai, Quebenang, Kako, Paruima and Chinoweng have been affected by the heavy rainfall. In addition farms at Chenapau, Region Eight and in the Central Rupununi on Region Nine are water-logged.
