GT&T Public Relations Officer Allison Parker has confirmed that the pole which collapsed on East Street on Tuesday afternoon, barely missing a couple, does not belong to the company.

“I had someone go by the location,” Parker told this newspaper via telephone, “and it has been confirmed that the pole does not belong to us.”

Sometime around 1.30 pm on Tuesday the defective poll fell on a car parked in front of an East Street home. Simone Baburam and her husband were about to enter the vehicle at the time. Baburam was standing inches away from where the pole fell.

The base of the pole, from where it broke, had appeared to be damp and rotten.

When Stabroek News arrived at the scene that day a Guyana Power and Light (GPL) crew was present removing wires. A GPL official, contacted later that afternoon, has said that they were still investigating whether the pole belonged to them.

Efforts made to contact GPL yesterday were futile.

Meanwhile, Baburam said that she has not heard from the electricity company. The woman said that she is not inclined to “go through all the difficulties I know I will have to put up with to get compensation for the damage to my car”.
