Agricola post office robbery suspect held

A suspect has been held in connection with the multi-million dollar break-in at the Agricola Post Office, Crime Chief Seelall Persaud said yesterday.

Persaud told this newspaper that the man is being questioned and up to press time last evening he was still in police custody.

The crime chief had explained that employees secured the building on Friday and on their return on Monday morning, they discovered the breakage and millions in cash and stamps missing from three safes.

He said that one contained over $1 million in cash, another had more than a $1 million in revenue stamps and the third contained a similar amount in postage stamps.

According to the initial information reaching Stabroek News, when the staff arrived a door had been breached and the three safes were open.

Two of the safes were opened with the use of a blowtorch while a key was apparently used on the third.

No one in the immediate area recalled seeing or hearing anything suspicious prior to the discovery. Police later turned up on the scene to commence investigations.
