A man appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court on Monday charged with assaulting his wife and using threatening language to her.
However, he was fortunate to have both matters dismissed with a stern warning from the magistrate after his wife pleaded for him, pointing out that they were still a couple.
Devon Persaud, 30, who is self-employed, is alleged to have unlawfully assaulted his wife Karen Persaud, causing her bodily harm on May 27 at Onderneeming Sandpit, Essequibo Coast.
He also allegedly used threatening language to his wife on June 3 at Suddie, Essequibo Coast. The defendant pleased not guilty to both charges.
His attorney, Alfred Bacchus, pleaded with the magistrate to give the defendant a stern warning on the condition that he will not repeat such abuse. The defendant’s wife also begged for him, asking the court to grant him a pardon since they are still a couple.
She also told the magistrate that whenever the defendant drinks he has a tendency to abuse her at home and in public places.
The magistrate then dismissed both matters after warning the defendant that he would be dealt with severely according to law if he should let such matters recur.
